Whether this is a common understanding between the participants or an authority figure, it is important that people set ground rules in the discussions. Some of the ground rules I find most important include listening to one another and being respectful to everyone. It is important to have people who are willing to listen to be able to respect and value everyone’s ideas and beliefs. Respect allows individuals to not feel persecuted or threatened. When an open environment is created, ideas can be shared that could benefit or improve the outcome of the group.
When I participate in a group I always try to bring an open mind and a strong leading voice. I have never agreed to ethnocentric ideas, so by keeping an open mind and a strong voice I am able to include everyone in the group. I try to fill a leader position to help things run smoothly and efficiently. Although I tend to be somewhat controlling in some situations, I find this attribute to be a positive characteristic on a team with people who are not as strongly self-motivated.
