Spina Bifida Limitations

I have been volunteering with the Spina Bifida Association of Alabama (SBA) for five years. I first decided to begin working with this association because working with children who have disabilities has always held a special place in my heart. Working with the SBA has helped me make a difference in my community and bring awareness to the disease of Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida victims have many limitations. The disease causes problems with their walking skills and most victims become confined to a wheel chair early in life. The SBA, however, provides the children with activities that they are capable of participating in. My job varies with each event. With the Bowl-a-Thon event, I greet the children, decorate the bowling alley, and help them in any way I can. I also bowl and …show more content…
Each child is an inspiration to me. The biggest challenge at the Spina Bifida Association of Alabama events is encouraging the children. Spina Bifida children can become easily discouraged due to their mobility limitations. They become disheartened when they have a hard time moving from place to place or even just opening a door. When faced with this challenge, I feel that it is important to become their personal cheerleader. I like encouraging them by reminding them all that they have been capable of doing. It really boosts their confidence and puts a smile on their face. Volunteering with the Spina Bifida Association of Alabama has impacted the community by bringing awareness to the disease. Although Spina Bifida is incurable, I have been able to teach others about the disease. The association provides a great deal of information on how to prevent Spina Bifida. Having folic acid in the body during pregnancy is the most important way to prevent the disease. Also, providing knowledge of Spina Bifida increases the amount of volunteers and sponsors to the association. Many people do not know what Spina Bifida is. That is why it is my job to inform others of its prevalence in our own

Things such as orange juice, multivitamins, eggs, and leafy greens are good sources of folic acid. The three most common forms of spina bifida are myelomeningocele, meningocele, and spina bifida occulta. Spina Bifida Occulta is the least severe form of spina bifida. It is very hard to detect without an x-ray because “there is a small gap in the spine, but no opening or sac on the back” (Spina Bifida, CDC); in fact, occulta means ‘hidden’ in latin. Some symptoms include…
