Spina Bifida The exact cause of spina bifida isn't known to anyone right now. But some factors that do cause it are environmental roles, nutrition, and genetic. When the baby doesn't get enough folic acid (common vitamin b) could be another cause. Some ways to prevent spina bifida are by taking 400 micrograms of folic acid everyday while being pregnant. Folic acid is a vitamin that helps build healthy cells but since it doesn't stay in the body for a long time they are required to take it everyday. The symptoms are different from everyone depending on the level and type of involvement. But most of the time the doctors can tell if the baby has spina bifida if it has; an abnormal tuft or clump of hair in the lower back, a small dimple, a birthmark on the spinal malformation, or on the lower part of the back there could be some tissue coming out (like a sack) that may have a thin layer of skin or no skin at all and that could be the Myelomeningocele. The other people who have the spina bifida lower in the spine, like near the hips, might not need a wheelchair. They could use braces, crutches, walkers, or could even walk without any assistance, because they have more control of their legs. Their skin is really sensitive so they will have to be checked for redness anywhere. They can develop sores, blisters, and burns on their feet, ankles, and hips, so they need to avoid hot baths and staying out in the sun for too long. They can't sit in one position for too long they will need to move once in awhile. Many of the babies can be allergic to rubber and latex so they won't be able to use pacifiers or rubber niples.
