Nursing Home Observation Report

When I decided to volunteer at the Del Amo Gardens Care Center, I wasn’t quite sure if I was emotionally ready. In March of 2013, my grandpa suffered a very severe stroke. It caused so much damage that it paralyzed half of his body, so we had to put him in a nursing home. Shortly after starting my volunteering, however, any negativity faded away as I was eager to assist with the activities. As I participated, discovered that even though a good amount of these patients suffered some sort of disease or disability, they still have the energy to find the fun in almost any situation. The Del Amo Gardens Care Center is located in Torrance, California. They are a nursing facility that treats elderly patients around the clock. They have both a short-stay wing and a permanent-stay wing with 94 patient rooms in total. The care center is funded and represented by the California Association of Health Facilities, which is a non-profit trade organization founded in 1950. When I fist …show more content…
Upon starting my volunteering, however, I began to feel comfortable working with the patients and they felt comfortable with me. We broke the ice by standing in a circle and throwing a ball to each other. After a break, we gathered around a television and picked a movie to watch. It was incredibly difficult trying to pick one that wasn’t too intense for the patients, but we settled on a movie from the 1940s. The next day, I helped serve coffee and graham crackers to patients. Shortly after, a musician named Steve Thacker serenaded us with his guitar and ukulele. Finally, I ended my volunteer service by assisting a patient with bingo and have more fun than I thought I would have. As I left the care center, I learned something from some of the patients, and that was try to find the fun in any

In late 2013, my grandmother was diagnosed with pulmonary fibroses, a terminal disease that slowly hardens and deteriorates the lungs. She was given about a year to live and the entire family was crushed. This was a very trying time for my family and me, but luckily it didn’t end in tragedy. This situation helped me appreciate the value of the ones you love and made me grateful to be alive. On my 14th birthday, in late April, I was worried it was the last one I’d have my grandma to celebrate with.…

For the good memories, every time all my classes are finished, my friends and I went to a nearby restaurant by local bus to eat while experiencing the public transport itself, it is pretty nice though. In the evening on the way home we took free popcorn and sprinkle as many cheese or salt powder as we want near the cafeteria. Then for the bad one is, in my second quarter I started to get really addicted to my online video games, I play it so much like 10-15 hours a day, only got cut by the dinner and shower time, aside from that, I sat on that sacred chair to continue my game, I slept in 3 am in the morning and wake up at 12 noon time, doesn’t care if I had classes or not, I take a shower and again sat on that sacred chair to play the game for 10 until 20 rounds I think, in short, at my campus, I’ve been called to go to the academic consultant to discuss about my grades from the past 3 quarters, I’ve been warned by them to let go my habit and start to change to a new positive habit, I didn’t take their advice seriously that time. And then, summer holiday comes, my friend and I went back to Indonesia for a holiday, each of us have fun with each of our friends, after roughly one month passed, we decided to go back to the States to continue our study together, travel 18 hours for the third time, then we had to pass through the immigration…

I regret not going to that last family dinner when he was still with us, I remember the last time I saw him, he brought home leftover mac and cheese from work for Juliann and me. I think about all the times I could have done something that might have made him happier, or all the times when he talked about how he was supposed to die young. I come home that day and we’re having a sort of party. Just my family and Juliann’s and Oum Bopha, but still a party. Juliann, my sister, and I are upstairs in my sister’s room and we hear the doorbell.…

A week after my surgery I had to start physical therapy which was good and bad. Good in the fact that I was always getting stronger, but bad in the fact that it was painful and it felt pointless to try to get my hip back to normal before I had to have yet another surgery. Even though I thought physical therapy was going to be pointless, I had no choice, so I went twice a week for over two months until the date of my next surgery. The day finally came for my next surgery and it seemed just like the last surgery. The only thing that was different was my excitement level, because I knew that the recovery for this surgery was going to be…

I had been a Radiation therapist for seventeen years when my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. I knew all too well what the next year or so would be like. His lung cancer had spread to his mediastinal lymph nodes, designating his disease as stage three of four. He did not have a favorable prognosis. I knew we would treat him aggressively in hope of a cure, but the reality was that the numbers were against him and he would eventually succumb to his disease.…

My dad helped by putting subtitles on the TV screen so if I wanted to watch it I had to read. Even if reading the subtitles to Sports Center was not my idea of fun on a Monday night. The most fun was having all my sibling on my side quizzing my spelling to better my abilities. All four of us sat in a circle run through words on my list. As I walked the stage at graduation, I smiled so big knowing everyone that made my graduation possible was sitting there, whether in person or…

It’s always on, which drives me a little crazy, especially at meal times. So, I really appreciated just having family time. Jackson, of course, asked to watch a show but I said, no, that we were going to just eat our lunch today and talk.
