Smoking Should Not Be Allowed On Campuses Because of the improvement of technology, it is easier and more affordable to buy cigarettes. Smoking becomes general phenomenon. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC), there are an estimated 42.1 million adults in the United States currently smoke cigarettes. However, the report also said that more than 2.4 million people died in the USA annually, and over 480,000 people died because of smoking. Medical News Today (2013) said that smokers died ten years sooner than non-smoker. Besides, there are close to 20 million college students in The U.S.A (Nation Center for Education Statistic, 2015) and 30% of them smoke (The MU School of Medicine, 2013). To be …show more content…
For example, if the freshmen see a lot of students smoke on the campus, what should they do next? Well, some students start to smoke in order to be the same as them. This phenomenon would fast spread between students. Besides, smokers usually get together. If people want to involve themselves in the smoker’s team, the best and quick way is to smoke with them.
The most important reason that I totally suggest to ban smoking on campuses is that we all have right to say no to second hand smoke. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2015), cigarette smoking kills more than 480,000 Americans each year, with more than 41,000 of these deaths from exposure to secondhand smoke. The American Cancer Society reports that secondhand smoke causes cancer, especially lung cancer. Therefore, we have right to refuse secondhand smoke to hurt us. When the students smoke in the stuffy room with less ventilation like classroom or restroom, others would easily expose to secondhand smoke. No one wants to get cancer because of second hand smoke. In the result, we have right to keep smoker away from campuses.
On the other hand, some people think that they could smoke on campuses. All American citizens have the Constitutional Right to smoke. It is their choice and decision. Smoking is not illegal, so students should be able to do it somewhere on campus. It is true that students usually
