This goes the same for Guy. As his journey goes along he realizes that there will be moments in his life where he will have to take decisions himself without the help of his wife. An old friend of Carpenter named Rossiter wants to kill him for being a traitor to the Americans and swears that he would kill him or go after his family so Carpenter decides to go face him even if it will cost his life. “ Well said! That's the policy. That's what I'll do. Just get out the garlic, and keep a crucifix handy. I'm off.” (Wouk 131). He says this to Myra and she thinks that it is a risky move but Guy Carpenter knows that his family matters to him and he needs to take this decision by himself. This shows both of the characters growth of independence throughout their journey. However, this also shows taking more responsibilities means taking more risks and being courageous. Willie also becomes more courageous by experiencing the war and and takes more responsibility to handle difficult situations.
