Break Of Day Character Analysis

In Tony Palmer’s novel ‘Break of Day’ the courage trait is a very important aspect throughout the novel. Each character in the novel shows courage by how they react in the novel and by the things they say. The mains characters in the novel that show the most courage are William Barrett, Uncle Jack and Murray Barrett. Courage shapes and manipulates the characters actions and decisions they make during their journeys. The character that shows the most courage in the novel is Murray. Each character in the novel represents courage in all different ways. In Break of Day, Murray is a brave and courageous person. In the novel Will reaches his breaking point and puts a gun at Sid Archer’s head. In this case Will presents courage when he puts the gun down and becomes a more mature child. Will demonstrates more courage when he shoot’s his dog, showing no fear. Courage is an important aspect throughout the novel. When Will tells Murray “Don’t worry I’ll look after you.” (p.39) Will says this after he shoots his dog. Will is demonstrating courage in this important part of the novel because it’s not easy killing a dog. Will also demonstrates courage when he say’s “I’m no war hero.” (p.201) Will is showing honesty and courage because he doesn't think he’s a hero, considering he was fighting for his country at the time. This demonstrates that Will is a courageous character in Break of Day, showing no fear or distress. He gives good advice and helps others in need of comfort.
