Both Anna Frith and John Proctor convey the response of human behaviour within a crisis through initiative and courage. In the face of witchcraft accuses, John Proctor refuses to fall victim to Abigail’s vengeance, standing up to the court and refusing to confess to complying with the devil, in which he gives his life. Although John Proctor is being accused of doing the devils work, he is aware of the girls lying about the events, this is shown when he states “you are pulling heaven down and raising up a whore!. John proctor is angered by this as innocent people are being put to trial. During the crisis of the plague, Anna Frith shows initiative and courage through aiding the people in Eyam, risking her own life in hope to save the town. Anna
