If there was a law that was going to be changed during your life time wouldn’t you want to know about it? The legalization of marijuana will be changed in the next ten years. It could be changed to making marijuana illegal everywhere, it could be changed to having all types of marijuana legal, but either way something will be done. As of right now it is the state’s decision on what they want to do about marijuana. Four states have it legalized for recreational use, with an age limit and the number of ounces that can be possessed. Twenty-one states have it legalized for medical uses. As of right now marijuana is the most illicit drug in the United States. If we made it legal, it could solve a bunch of issues that we have around our country.

Cannabacea is the plant family that cannabis belongs to. In cannabis, there will be high levels of psychoactive cannabinoid, delta-tetrahydrocannabinol, and low levels of non/anti-psychoactive cannabinoid, cannabinol, which is also known as marijuana (Baron). These types of substances are what makes people feel the way that they do, when they smoke marijuana. It dates back to ancient times, when marijuana was used for many medical uses, and was legal. You could smoke it and not get into trouble, or go to jail. In 1931 marijuana was illegal in 29 states, and then in 1937 the Marihuana Tax Act was passed and put a tax on marijuana (“Marijuana”). Then in 1969 the court case Leary v. United States, the Marihuana Tax Act was found violating the fifth amendment, which led to Congress passing the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) of 1970, that made marijuana a Schedule 1 drug and if found with possession of marijuana it would be a minimum of 5 years in jail (“Marijuana”). Now, centuries later, marijuana is in a dispute to either be legal or illegal, for medicinal use or for recreational use. Over 100 million people that are in the U.S today deal migraines, chronic pains, discomfort, etc. When people deal with these problems they have prescriptions opioid painkillers, which can come addictive. Since 1999 the need for the painkillers have almost quadrupled, and 46 people die a day from overdosing on these meds (Graves). Marijuana will not cause you to overdose, so if it became legal the deaths of people overdosing would significantly go down. Marijuana does not affect your body as much heroin, alcohol, or even smoking. It was said in, Marijuana and Medicine: Assessing the Science Base that, “Cannabis is nontoxic to healthy cells and organs, and that by comparison with other drugs used mainly for 'recreational ' purposes, cannabis could be rated to be a relatively safe drug.” (Armentano). Marijuana is nonharmful compared to other substances that we have legal, like alcohol. Marijuana it is a lot safer than drinking alcohol. Smoking marijuana doesn’t cause liver failure, doesn’t cause ulcers, doesn’t cause hangovers, and it doesn’t make someone act like a fool, by falling down or slurring word, like alcohol does (Mano). That being said, if marijuana isn’t as damaging as alcohol, why is it not legal? Then there’s the fact that alcohol has not just destroyed people physical, it has harmed generations of people.
