Managing all the tasks and challenges in our lives is quite a big job. We most often need help to work through life challenges and tough times. Short-term counselling is a model that adopts a solution focused counselling model that enables us to develop the essential skills to tackle these life obstacles. Confidentiality of the counselling helps the learner that they will get the assistance they need in relation to wide range of personal and educational related challenges.

Action stage
This stage involves reviewing the goals, and preparing for termination. The counsellor needs to help the learner holistically by helping them to look at the situation from different angles such as their feelings, thoughts and behaviour as all three are crucial in dealing with their situation effectively. Focusing on all three will help the learner to approach the situation from different viewpoints and come up with a more realistic solution to their problem on their own.
Like any other activity, counselling must have a focus and as such it is important to set goals which are the outcomes that the learner wants to achieve at the end of counselling process. Next is defining how these goals will be met, monitoring of the improvement as well as evaluating the end result of the actions. The counsellor must be there for the learner every step of the process.
The actions include addressing and setting goals, deciding on methods of achieving them, monitoring the progress of the actions and evaluating the results. Throughout this process, you as the adult in the helping relationship, accompany the learner until his or her situation has improved.
