Confidentially is the key component in building a healthy foundation for trust. In situations where a student is at its most vulnerable, a school counsellor can help guide the child into a direction where the child’s welfare is best met. Both documents illustrate the importance of privacy, such as sharing information pertaining to the student’s counselling session to other teaching staff or to other students is forbidden. It is also stressed the importance of informing the student that the counsellor has the duty to report any limits to the confidential nature of the information shared. In other words, a counsellor has a duty to inform the appropriate authorizes when or if a child’s welfare is at risk, it is also suggested that the child is to be aware of this obligation prior to counselling. To add, both in the United States and Canada a counsellor who possesses information about a student who poses a physical threat to another person may also need to act without the consent of the student. A school counsellor must respect all student’s beliefs, values, and sexual orientations, no matter the counsellors point-of-view on the matter. A student must feel safe and secure in expressing their personal self-identity without feeling imposing ideas. It is important that each school creates a safe, welcoming environment for all students in hopes that they can feel the necessary encouragement to build positive self-esteem. Counsellors are obliged to respect the integrity and promote the welfare of the counselees with whom they are working through the development and implementation of the Individual Pathways Plan, in other words, a school counsellor must respect the student’s decision so long as it is in the best interest of the child’s well-being. A counsellor must not implement a plan for reason without the student’s consent. Finally, a counsellor’s primary responsibility for ensuring that their counselling services and educational programs of the school consider the total development of every student.
