Over two thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by water; less than a third is taken up by land. However, the surface of the ocean is polluted. The book Oceans a Visual Guide defined pollution as “The introduction of substance, material or unwanted heat energy from human activities that adversely affect an ecosystem” (Hutchinson and Hawkins 210). Sylvia Earle, an American marine biologist, explore, and author has a Master of Science and Doctorate of Philosophy, mentioned that some people don’t know or care about the changes that the ocean is going through because of the pollution. People don’t understand that without the ocean there would be no life, there would be no living (Earle). The ocean provides life for` living; …show more content…
It enters in the composition of all creatures on the planet, so if the ocean gets sick, people would get sick as well, and if the ocean dries up, then the earth would be unviable to live on (Earle). Sylvia Earle describes, “Earth would be a lot like Mars without oceans cold, barren, and inhospitable. Or, how about the moon there's a place with no bothersome ocean and no life. Or Venus. Yes, the beautiful — and lifeless — hot planet with no ocean. It doesn't matter where on Earth people live; everyone is utterly dependent on the existence of that lovely, living saltwater soup. There's plenty of water in the universe without life, but nowhere is there life without water" (Earle). Oceans are the cornerstones of life and by polluting the water by humans’ wastes with toxic chemicals, it would return badly on the humans’ lives and the earth. Furthermore, there are lots of sources polluting the oceans such as, plastic, oil spill, …show more content…
The author Charles J. Moore, is an internationally recognized expert on marine plastic pollution, mentioned that it’s so hard to recycle plastic especially that plastic melt at low temperatures. Consequently the impurities dose not vaporized; however, even if the impurities does vaporized it won’t make any difference it would still causing pollution (Moore). Charles J. Moore went 10 times to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (“one of five major garbage patches drifting in the oceans north and south of the Equator at the latitude of our great terrestrial”) with a team of scientist. However, in his last trip to Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 2014 Moore said that he was shocked of the increment of the quantity of plastic waste since his last trip in 2009 (Moore). The book Oceans a Visual Guide notes that plastic become very important in the modern world and everyday use, but the necessity of using it would lead marine animals for extinct (Hutchinson and Hawkins 210). Charles J. Moore suspects that more animals are being killed by plastic waste than by climate changes. Marine animals are mistaking plastics for their natural food and it causes liver and stomach abnormalities, and sometimes choking them to death (Moore). Oprah Winfrey’s website described the plastic island as “the world’s largest trash dump” (Gillis). Also Oprah Winfrey’s said, "the island is
