Global Food System: Ellen Gustafson
The social issue presented in the video by Ellen Gustafson is about global food problem. Within this video, she is addressing how a big number of people all over the world are facing hunger problem. In addition, she talked about how many other people are facing obesity problem because of eating some of the produced food which lacks corn, soy, and wheat. Ellen said that the main cause of both hunger and obesity problem is agriculture. She mentioned that today’s agricultural system lack the use of technology in it. This is the social issue because it is affecting many people around the world mainly young children are the most affected people. It is necessary for the public …show more content…
She talked of how overfishing caused the decrease in a number of some aquatic animals. In addition, Sylvia talked about how aquatic animals are facing the problem of depletion of oxygen. Not only aquatic animals but also human being because most of the oxygen in the atmosphere is generated by the oceans and seas. She mentioned some consequences we also face because of destroying water bodies like rainfall. This is social issues because all livings are affected when there is no rainfall. For example, we are not getting enough oxygen because the one produced by oceans have decreased. Not only that but also, we are not getting fresh water which is a social issue because it can’t be possible to live without having fresh water to use. Also, there are other perspectives from other people talking about environmental preservation. It is not only Sylvia Earle who thinks that we need to protect our environment mainly oceans, but also Marine Conservation Institute thinks that it is necessary to protect our oceans. The reasons provided by this Institute is that Oceans produce half of the oxygen people breathe (Marine Conservation Institute, n.d.). Also, oceans provide a sixth of the animal protein people eat, oceans are considered to be the source of medicines such as cancer, pain and bacterial diseases (Marine Conservation Institute, n.d.). Furthermore, living oceans absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and cut the impact of climate change (Marine Conservation Institute, n.d.). My own perspectives on this issue I agree with both sides because it is necessary to protect our oceans so that we can keep having fresh oxygen, and medicines from seas and oceans as well as we can still get fish to eat. For example, people are selling fishes at a high cost which is hard for
