Have you ever been told you couldn’t do something because of your gender, or you do something like a girl? There is a serious social issue of sexism that is dehumanizing the society today. I believe that teachers can play a crucial role in solving sexism issue through engaged pedagogy because it strives to value self expression and this would allow students to feel comfortable to be themselves. Sexism is being prejudice or stereotyping a certain gender. Sexism is most commonly discriminating against women. Today there are many gender norms that are followed by our society today. In Paulo Freire’s piece, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, he states that a social justice issue is, the permanent fount of the generosity, which is nourished by death, despair, and poverty” (Freire 44). Freire would classify sexism as a social justice issue because women are being oppressed from their ability to be equal to men. Sexism is dehumanizing because it is limiting people from reaching their full potential. Ones full potential is when one is one hundred percent authentic. Friere describes dehumanization as, “a distortion of the vocation of being more fully human” (Freire 44). Dehumanizing is taking away something that makes a person unique. In Sara Ahmed’s piece, The Promise of Happiness, she focuses on what is happiness and how one obtains happiness. “Happiness involves a form of orientation: the very hope for happiness means we get directed in specific ways as happiness is assumed to follow some life choices and not others” (Ahmed 54). By this Ahmed means that one’s happiness shouldn’t be based off of others but based on how we live our own lives. In order to incorporate this happiness into people’s lives we need to stray away from gender norms and allow people to decide how they are going to live their lives and create their own
