Paulo Freire discussed the teacher-student contradiction in the text of “Pedagogy of the Oppressed.” This contradiction is when students are regulated by teachers. The teachers have the power over the students, which places them in a situation that limits their freedom as a whole. The Banking Concept of Education is the reason for the lack of freedom for students. This concept contradicts students as objects, and not individuals. Assuming that the students know nothing, Freire stated that the students are the empty banks and the instructor is the banker who banks in knowledge into the students. Therefore, students are limited on their opinions, decisions, and ideas as a whole. The students are monitored by the instructors who act as the enforcer. …show more content…
The Problem-Posing method is the foundation of modern critical pedagogy. Problem-Posing is an alternative that can minimize The Banking Concept of Education through communication. Freire says that “The dialogical character of education as the practice of freedom does not begin when the teacher-student meets with the students-teachers in pedagogical situation, but rather when the former first asks herself or himself what she or he will dialogue with the latter about”(Freire 326). Communication is highly important today because it allows a substance for a relationship to grow with the student and instructor. Composing dialogue with the students, instructors develop a sense to the students that the conversation is a lesson being taught. No teacher should be higher than any student; everyone is equal. Knowledge can be learned from both the student and the instructor. The professor does not know everything about the subject or lesson that is being taught. Staff development is essential yearly. Students are evaluated from records compose of test, samples, brief oral presentations, self-analysis, and observations. The student is grade is compose from many observations and measurements. Problem-Posing is a way that works to educate students at all levels from Kindergarten to College. Therefore, the Problem-Posing Method is a reasonable solution. Freire states “In order to function, authority must be on the side of freedom, not against it” (Freire 328). Undergoing the banking concept is considered to be disrespectful and ignorant due to lack of freedom. Whatever the teacher states the student must obey or the student will fail. In a sense, this method shows glimpse of slavery. The students opinions and choices are overshadowed due to the teacher. Due to this concept, students cannot experience the world for themselves. The Banking Concept mainly tells the person what he or she will do, while the Problem-Posing gives the person suggestions on how to become the person he or she wants to become.
