Children begin to experience sexism at a young age, typically in elementary school. An example of a subliminal sexist message that they might experience would be a teacher scolding a female student for acting in an unorthodox fashion that does not fit the ‘calm, respectful, and neat’ stereotype for girls, but then excusing the same actions of a male student, using the overused, disgusting statement ‘boys will be boys.’ In a different situation, a boy might be teased, mocked, made fun of for showing there more sensitive. These gender roles are not only teaching young children stereotypes, but also preventing them from perusing their goals because what they want is not ‘modest enough for a girl’ or ‘strong enough for a boy.’

An example of sexism in the media would be a headline regarding how ‘promiscuous’ or ‘provocative’ a female celebrity is when she is known for being in multiple relationships, and then how ‘sexy’ and ‘manly’ a male celebrity is when he has been with multiple women. There is no difference in these situations, except the gender. Another scenario would be making the light of the abuse of a male to show the empowerment and strength of a woman.
