Sexism In America Research Paper

As a generalization most American presidents have been white Anglo-Saxon protestants, in the last decade presidential candidates have become more diverse. While candidates are diversifying, America’s Presidents are still not representing large portions of The Unites State’s population, including women and naturalized citizens. America is a nation that is seen as a leader of democracy and forward thinking, but yet there has not been a leader that represents over 50 percent of the countries population, women and the 12.8 million naturalized citizens are still illegible to be president of The United States.

However, those doses not mean that a female president would not certain challenges that her male counterparts have not. Sexism is still an issue in American society and media, as sexism involves women as a whole, this discrimination would affect America’s female presidents as well. You can see obvious accounts in sexism in the last three campaign seasons against the female candidates. The medias description of female politicians undermines not just their credibility but also their decisions. When the media puts the focus on a women’s outfit instead of her intelligence, or when the media uses gender stereotypes and double standards to question if a women’s gender will allow her to be a strong and effective president (Heimer). Even the phrases used during the 2008 election, for example, in the Washington Post article by Eugene Robinson he writes, "Obama, here comes Mama. And she doesn't play”, this phrase undermines Senator Clinton’s political campaign and experience (Roberson). These sexist phrases and double standard comments are to common among the medias coverage of female politician. While female politicians should not have face any additional challenges that her male predecessors did not face, they
