Recent years, with the rapid population growth and climate change, water shortage becomes a more and more serious problem for many areas of the world. Australia also suffers from water scarcity, as the driest continent experiencing worst drought for many years since early 2000s[1]. Desalination plays an important role in Australia’s water security. The large-scale application of this technology began in the arid Middle East region{2}. At present, seawater desalination is the only new and sustainable water source available to Australian, which effectively against drought and population growth, and has been more and more widely recognized on its validity and reliability. This essay will discuss the various controversies related to seawater desalination in Australia.
1 the current status and the future of seawater desalination industry in Australia
The first desalination plant was built in 2006 in the city of Perth which produces with a capacity of producing 130 megalitre(ml) of drinking water per day and supplies 17%of Perth’s water needs. {3}For now, there have been over 50 large-scale desalination plants in operation. Especially, Adelaide desalination plant's daily output is approximately 270Ml, providing up to 50% of Adelaide's …show more content…
It is surrounded by three oceans—the Indian, Pacific and the Southern oceans, together with the Tasman, Timor, Arafura and Coral Seas [20],(4)which provides abundant seawater for desalinate and save cost .In addition, desalination technology has been developed in recent years, which increased water productivity, reduced energy consumption and fouling. With these developments, water prices are gradually lowered. Besides, since most of major cities are located along the coast in Australia, it has more economic advantages compared to other countries because of non-requirement of long-distance water transmission after
