I’ve made so many new friends through running and it is just a wonderful atmosphere to be in. Running teaches many characteristics such as: leadership, dedication, determination, and the drive to be the absolute best. It is such an un-stressful sport as well, you just go out there and do it. There isn't much to it rather than to run a certain time or pace. Adding to, being on the Bartlett Cross Country team makes it a much more memorable experience because its a great group of runners that all want to be the best. Running has brought out the real Jackson Williams, my parents and past coaches have even said, “I’ve never seen you so happy.” That makes me feel good about what I am doing. This is what running means to

For this project, the first thing that my group and I did was research what needed to be known, such as: running techniques, diet plans, recommended stretches, appropriate running attire, and how velocity and acceleration help the runner in seeing how they can improve. After we gathered all of our research, we documented it and filed it until it was needed. The next step was the running. Materials needed for this portion are a stopwatch, a meter stick, calculator, and appropriate running gear.…

At some point in time in their development, most people encounter an adult figure, who instills a positive change in their lives. For me, that person was Cindy Scannella--my track and my cross country coach for my first two years of high school. With her unique approach to coaching, Coach Scannella not only gave me the confidence to flourish in the sport and lead my team, but she also gifted me with a love for running. This passion of mine as well as her continual support has carried me through the difficulties of my grandfather’s death, my parents’ divorce, and other strenuous circumstances including the end of her time as my coach. Her presence in my life has truly altered my life for the better.…

While I have not had nearly as many hardships in my life as Jeannette Walls in her book The Glass Castle, there are still some things that her and I have in common. Throughout the book, Walls endured many struggles while traveling with her dysfunctional family. Jeannette’s father is constantly getting in the way of her success, from stealing her money to not always making her go to school. Eventually, she leaves her parents behind and makes her way to New York City, where she goes to college and finds success. Similar to how Jeannette had to overcome the obstacles between her and her success, her parents in The Glass Castle, I had to overcome the obstacle between me and my success, my bones.…

From my last 3 years of running cross county I have learned a lot of things. One is that you should never give up, second is that if you work hard enough then you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, and third is how you can go from disliking something to loving something. How I've learned these things from cross county is when I first started cross country, my sophomore year I couldn't run to save my life. Coach would always time us on how fast we could run two miles and I would always be last and be so far behind everyone else which was quite embarrassing but I couldn't help it I had just started and I'd never ran before in my life, at my very first meet I couldn't even run the first mile and I ended up having to drop out. After that I didn't like cross county at all because I wasn't good at it…

I was already back at Lawrenceville, alone on the track. I had the familiar cramp in my gut, the familiar pain in my knee. After the fourth big injury, most people would just quit. Instead, I found myself seduced back to running. Yet when I think back to the race that pushed me into this relationship, I can never tell why I chose to fight for my spot on the team.…

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute.…

As the legendary Olympian Jesse Owens once said, “Awards become corroded, friends gather no dust”. This was the quote that the seniors chose for the Cross Country teams t-shirt this year. The senior leaders chose this quote specifically to show how the sport isn’t just about winning, it's about the team. This year the seniors decided to show the younger kids just how the team was always supposed to be. They instilled new activities and more importantly they implemented more team building exercises.…

The last big factor that even I have yet to master is mindset. Hydration cannot be emphasized enough to runners. According to Runner’s World there is a calculation on how much water each individual should be drinking a day. The equation is different for males and females, for males the calculation is (bodyweight multiplied by .35). For females the calculation is (bodyweight multiplied by .31).…

I also think using an organized approach to running is important, especially if the individual has a desired goal in mind. However, before attempting large goals such as running in a 5k, the individual may need to set smaller goals initially. Most people normally have busy schedules which take away from their exercise time. By having a permanent and simplified schedule for each day; they will experience less mental stress, less planning time, and greater results from their training.…

Running has been apart of my life ever since I can remember, my mom and my grandmother have inspired me so much with this sport. It all started when I won my first race in third grade, that was the moment when I really fell in love with running. My sophomore year of cross country is when my running career came to a stop because of my shin hurting, at first I thought it was just shin splints because I had been running hard for the two weeks prior. Then the pain lasted for three weeks and during that time I was icing and doing all different exercises to strengthen my legs. My coach found out and decided to pull me from our first meet of that season and he made me ride the bike for that week, I was devastated because I was finally training…

There are huge gaps in the history of running but it appears throughout the courses of the years. In the past people ran while hunting for food, but with time running became a form of training, sport, and a hobby. Running may seem simple, but there is a lot more going on than you think. Long distance runners, run for long periods of time focusing on endurance which uses the long-term energy system. While sprinters run 10-15 seconds at full speed, focusing on speed using the immediate energy system and the short-term energy system.…
