How Cross Country Changed My Life

Improved Essays
As the legendary Olympian Jesse Owens once said, “Awards become corroded, friends gather no dust”. This was the quote that the seniors chose for the Cross Country teams t-shirt this year. The senior leaders chose this quote specifically to show how the sport isn’t just about winning, it's about the team. This year the seniors decided to show the younger kids just how the team was always supposed to be. They instilled new activities and more importantly they implemented more team building exercises. These exercises are focused on making each runner a better overall person, friend, and hopefully even change their perspective of life. It is exercise like these that have bettered me as a person over the years. Cross Country has changed my life because of the life skills it provides, the team atmosphere, and how it contributes to my other sports.
My first experience with cross country was in eighth grade. Immediately, I notice the maturity of the team and how everyone seemed to have their own roles. This system encompasses

I happen to be in cross country, cross country skiing, and track. In skiing it is imperative that one has good stamina. This is necessary because similar to cross country running, skiing is a five kilometer race. These races are against the best of the best high school athletes in the state, therefore being a runner is almost a must. In track things are a little bit different. An athlete can choose to do a more anaerobic event such as the 100, or they can choose an event such as the mile. My event of choice is the 800 meters. The 800 is essentially the breaking point into the endurance events. It is this type of event in which super long distance runners are too slow and sprinters would die before the finish. In this event, it is critical to have good stamina and cross country provides that for me. Without cross country, I wouldn’t be nearly as successful as I am in other

Unfortunately, I got injured and had trouble getting focused thereafter. Cross country and distance track are two very similar sports, but they have some major differences and I had yet to learn that. I didn’t do terribly that cross country season, but once again, I was trapped in the lie that, “I can’t do this,” mostly because I was focused on the pain in the moment. Like the previous year, I moved onto track and excelled a second time.…

I Corinthians 9:24 states, “Do you not know that those who run a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you obtain it”. This Bible verse has had significant meaning to me particularly while running track in high school. Track is a sport that requires hard work, determination, speed, focus, and self-discipline.…

The different fall sports had been presented, and as far as I knew, I had no plans whatsoever of participating in any sports—well, except for soccer which was a winter sport. As everyone dispersed to the different sections in the pavilion where each coach of the fall sports stood, I found myself sitting with others whose decision was like mine—not to play a sport. That changed when I heard one of my current best friends, Corinne, rushing down the bleacher stairs and begging me to go with her to the cross country meeting. I thought to myself, “hah, running long distance? yeah right,”…

Before I arrived at the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus on August 28, I vowed to myself that I would never run cross country for a school again because I never had the opportunity to practice on wooded trails, rather than concrete. But that changed one day, when I explored the campus and realized that there were wooded trails intertwining in every which way in the dark green forest lined with salmon berries and blackberry bushes that were surrounding the Upper Empire Lake. My dream has always been running in the forest, and afterwards swimming in a crystal clear, clean, deep, and refreshing lake after a long run. The Southwestern Oregon Community College Campus would provide superior running trails and a lake to swim in for my dream to come true. Only a few days later, after I explored the campus, I accidentally bumped into the cross country coach, Anthony Collins.…

A cross country race usually lasts around twenty minutes, I’ve some people finish as fast as sixteen minutes, but that’s very unusual. Track races, on the other hand, last at most about 10 minutes if that, but the sprinting events last less than a minute. I’d rather watch one longer race than a few shorter races, but depending on the weather, the race distance, and the environment my answer could…

I once thought I couldn’t believe in myself! I felt as if I were nothing but a sheet of glass that was completely useless. When there were gloomy days, I felt like broken glass that was scattered all over the ground and I wouldn’t be fixable. So I thought if I joined a sport, I would then, have no choice but to believe that I can do more and accomplish more, and be better than whom I was! When I was little I loved to run…

One year ago today, the first ever Greeley Cross Country Championships was hosted, a 5k race at Josephine Jones Park between the five high schools in Greeley, Colorado- Frontier Academy, Greeley West, University Schools, Northridge, and Greeley Central. Last year Frontier placed first at the meet in the boys race. However, since then their top runners graduated and the Central boys became a real threat to many teams. Although today was mainly a way for Central to come out on top, I wanted redemption from the poor performance I gave at that race. Last year.…

Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…

As a year-round student-athlete, balancing classwork and academics with training has been at the forefront of my entire high school career—freshman to senior year. Though the classes I undertook were rigorous and required an extreme level of commitment and attention, I persisted with my athletic career because it taught me several valuable life lessons. The sport I feel that I am most involved in is Cross Country. While only a fall sport, it is, in my opinion, one of the most physically demanding and difficult sports to compete in. We train by running upwards of thirty miles a week to compete against other teams in 5000-meter races on various terrains.…

While I’ve always considered running to be my strong suit, learning how to expand my athletic horizons would ultimately be a sign of my growing maturity as I begin the next chapter of my life and 4 years of continued involvement on campus. Throughout high school, being a member of multiple team sports impacted me greatly in a multitude of ways. I clearly remember the first day of high school, after training with my Cross Country team the majority of the summer, I felt that I already knew people with similar interests as me all around my school. In many ways, rowing achieves the same idea. Along with my roommates, and peers attending Madison from my High School, I would have members of the rowing team to fall back on, study with, explore campus life with, and build lasting friendships after my 4 years on campus are complete.…

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute.…

Well, it isn’t fun, and it is hard, but the friends that I have made in the sport, are some that I will never forget.…
