Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute. The miles fly by and before I know it, I’m done. I pass through the chute and listen to my coach tell me my time: 17:34, a new personal record. A feeling of relief passes over me, but also a feeling of determination, awaiting the next meet to get faster. This is my competitive edge, and many of my peers do not know it exists. Currently, I am part of the Deerfield/Cambridge boys varsity team as we are seeking a returning journey to state this year. Realizing that I would have to step up for the team, I began to train over the summer and I am now the third runner for the team. Besides running, I am also an active co-president of my school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. But how can I be competitive with NHS? I seek to organize, oversee, and help with as many service opportunities as I can. My burning desire to help others as much as possible is my competitive spirit at work, and in return, I receive the satisfaction of making other people happy. Along with cross country and NHS, I also have a competitive nature when it comes to school. My mind hungers for knowledge and information, and I become competitive with this through my grades at school. On every test, with every project, I work towards a perfect score because that is the best I can do. And with this, I continue my competitive nature by accepting my score but always working to improve how I

Although you have to be 36 years old to legally become the president of the United States, I feel as if I’ve experienced an aspect of presidency in my fourteenth year of living. Of course, it is obvious that being president of my middle school’s National Junior Honor Society is nowhere near being the president of the United States. But in fact, my experience depicts a quite harrowing and concerning aspect of presidency. In an interwoven city and school, creating close relationships was inevitable.…

National Honor Society has helped me develop their four pillars, scholarship, service, leadership, and character, into my daily life. To become a member, a specific GPA is required and maintained, which is more motivation to keep up academic achievement. Additionally, tutoring is a major part of our society, so having a good understanding of the subject you are tutoring in makes sure that you maintain the level of academic achievement the honor society calls for. I have always loved doing service in my community and being a member of the society has grown that passion for me in different ways, I became exposed to tutoring and community clean ups. In the past few years, I’ve volunteered with a variety of organizations from National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club. I have also co-founded a Community Outreach Club at high school. Through the Church I’ve assisted with Vacation Bible School and middle school retreats. One of my favorite memories came from volunteering for the first time with National Spanish Honor Society. Choosing to participate in this program was not a difficult decision, since I knew I wanted to continue practicing my Spanish and volunteer in the community at the same time.…

The National Honor Society is based on four pillars, which are, Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. In some ways, I have already shown three of these pillars in my first two years of high school. However, there are several other ways in which I plan to lead my school, serve my community, and build my character, during my final years of high school. As I have mentioned, there are some ways that I have already shown leadership, service, and built my character during my first two years at Parkway South.…

National Honors Society is something I am honored to be asked to be a part of, it is something I have been working for, that just comes to show that if you put your mind to something and become dedicated that anything is possible. NHS is designed to help better students, and to show that you can always do better. It is a respectable program for students who have excelled in school, which includes: no discipline referrals, maintaining a high GPA throughout the year, and being a well behaved student. I as a student of W.T. Sampson high school would like to be a part of NHS because of all the hard work and dedication I have put into this school year. Another reason would be how good it looks on college applications; it would give me higher chances being accepted.…

I strive for success and I never want to settle for anything less than the best. In accordance to Michael Jordan’s quote, I believe that first I have to become the best, and then, after being consistent, I need to compete with myself, and be the best I can be and I believe that is limitless. There are many times I have seen this and competition’s positive results in my own life. I have one elder sibling, and for as long as I can remember, he has not only been a benchmark but has also been competition for me. When we used to play soccer together, I would always do my best to beat him in skill and class, and since he was significantly older than me, specifically six years, I would usually fail.…

Imagine being in 6th grade, and having someone come to talk to your entire sixth grade student body about middle school sports. During a question and answer session I asked if it was possible to run cross country and play basketball, and in a loud voice that went across the gym, a kid said “Why ask you’re too fat to play sports” and the whole gym burst into laughter. This is how my introduction to middle school officially began. As one could imagine the pain and humiliation that went along with my torture, but because I suffer from generalized anxiety disorder my problems were exemplified. The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…
