The three readings by Roxane Gay talks about rape culture and men. The idea that rape has more of a negative effect on men rather than women. The idea that the impact is more detrimental to the rapist rather that the victim is something that occurs in these readings a lot.
In Careless Language of Sexual Violence, Gay talks about the case of James McKinley Jr., where the focus was more on the lives of the men, rather than the 11-year-old child who was raped by 18 men, ranging from the ages of middle school boys to 27 year olds. The idea of rape within a marriage is insane and the ideology that a husband can do anything to his wife without her consent is something that we need to learn from and understand. This was the first time I had heard about this concept. It is explained by Sarah Nicole Prickett as, “the inordinate pride men feel in owning and wielding their dicks” (Gay, 134). At first I thought this was funny and then the more I read over it and thought about it, I realized it was true. The idea that men are so controlled by a reproductive body part that it restricts them from thinking and allows them to ruin someone’s life, just so they can fulfill a desire that their reproductive organ had.
