Even though this is the most common, this is the least common rape to be reported by a victim (Mooney, Knox, Schacht. 2017). Acquaintance rape happens just like any other rape, maybe even easier. As discussed before, men tend to get confused of what consent is, so being a close friend to a woman or being their boyfriend may make consent even more confusing to the rapist (Angelone, Mitchell, Grossi. 2015). This type of crime makes convictions very difficult. The justice system finds it hard to convict this type of rape because consent was such a confusion. The system has their own way of looking at what defines rape which is shown above, and if it doesn’t fit the criteria, then charges are usually dropped. Date rape is one of the crimes that rarely get convicted because judges believe that if the victim and the rapist were on a date or dating that it is hard to convict this as rape because it doesn’t meet the “real-rape template” (Lacrombe. …show more content…
As explained throughout the paper, the justice system has lists of scenarios that make this crime less of what it is and pushes shame to the victim. This is the number one crime for victimization that turns to something very similar to bullying on the victim. Victimization is mostly to the women who have been raped, people look back to the situation of the rape and pick at the wrong the victim did. That the victim deserved what had happened to her because she didn’t act what was expected of her (Ferrao, Goncalves. 2015). The expectations for women are very different for what is put for men because women are expected to act like a ‘lady’. Being a ‘lady’ you are not to drink too much, stay in groups, don’t take a drink from anyone, watch your drink, don’t show too much, don’t be too sexual, and the list goes on. These are something women are being constantly reminded when they have been a victim of rape, and if they had crossed the line on something that was listed, rape was obviously their fault (Ferrao, Goncalves. 2015). This is how a victim becomes victimized for a crime that was not their fault. Rape victimization is also one of the number one reasons why victims of rape do not report anything to the officials because they do feel that it was their fault. This is how a victim is punished, the justice system and society puts out these sometimes-unrealistic roles that women must meet for
