Recently, women have broken their silence by coming out and complaining about violence and harassment, and media took its position to raise awareness to the public. These 2 factors contributed in highlighting this type of crime, as well as raising awareness in the society regarding the manifest and latent function of sexual assault.
In Educational context, if sexual assault happen between a staff member and a students, and he/she has been convicted of an indictable offence, it will be reported to the ATA (Alberta Teachers’ Association), and the executive secretary shall refer the matter to a hearing committee, and if found guilty will be terminated. As per the criminal code section 271, if any person found guilty, he/she will be liable for imprisonment from not more than 10 to 14 years according to the case.
Teachers’ role is vial in supporting sexual assault survivors, starting from raising awareness in the classroom about the causes, consequences and different ways of support. Teachers should emphasis on the varies methods of support; starting from being a good listener, showing a sense of believe, honor the survivor autonomy, always remind them that it is not their fault , and most importantly to refer them to an organizations with specialized
