Joslyn (2011) cited Mauch & Birch (1998), “The exploratory inquiry and case study methods serve two functions. Exploratory research investigates relatively new or unsearched areas. Case study research is ‘the background, development, current conditions, and environmental interactions’ of one or more individuals. They are observed, recorded, and analyzed for stages or patterns in relation to internal and external influences” (p.31). The significance and meaning of the case studies of the ten female teachers’ sexual misconduct will further explain the phenomena 0f educator sexual misconduct through identifying themes, reoccurring behavior and patterns, and establish a protocol for student safety.

The female teacher had been the victim’s teacher in middle school, and became close after the divorce of the victim’s parents. The relationship turned sexual shortly after the female child’s fifteenth birthday. In the summer of 1997, the female teacher and the victim were returning from an outing, when the female teacher stopped on a county road. The female teacher kissed and fondled the victim’s breasts. Several weeks later, the victim was in the female teacher’s car stopped on a county road where the female teacher touched, kissed, and fondled the victim’s breasts. The female teacher fondled and placed her mouth between the victim’s legs. The sexual misconduct also occurred at residence of the female teacher. The sexual abuse took place between August and November of 1997, as often as twice a month. The victim expressed to the female teacher, “They could not do this any longer.” The female teacher stated, “She would leave town.” The victim stated, “She was afraid of losing the female teacher’s friendship and support.” The female teacher gave the victim a cell phone so she could call her when she wanted to communicate with her. The female teacher received a fourteen-year prison sentence with twelve years suspended. The female served six years of the sentence and was placed on probation for three years. The female teacher was the victim’s basketball coach. The victim informed another staff member that she was involved in a romantic relationship with the female teacher. The female teacher used her cell phone to communicate with the victim on several occasions. When the female teacher was questioned, she admitted to the investigators, she had an intimate relationship with the victim. Also, the female teacher was aware of the victim’s age. The victim and the female teacher exchanged oral sex to each other five times during the fall of 2009. The sexual contact occurred at the resident of the female
