Rape: A Serious Issue
Rape is a serious social and public issue in the United States. Women are usually the victims of rape, while men are usually the offenders. The majority of women are sexually assaulted by men who they are familiar with. Women are far less likely to report a rape if they know the person who assaulted them. For this reason, the number of sexual assaults are significantly under reported. In this paper, you will see how in both, Amy Schumer’s “Football Town Nights” and The Onion: College Basketball Star Overcomes Rape try to educate the public about rape by the use of comedy.
Amy Schumer targets rape in "Football Town Nights." This is a courageous sketch from the comedian's Comedy Central Series Inside Amy Schumer. A knockoff of Friday Night Lights, the sketch “Football Town Night” focuses on a high school football coach who puts a "no raping" policy into place on his team. Following the template of a Friday Night Lights episode, the team riots. They reunite after an inspirational and ironic locker room pep talk. Schumer plays the Coach's wife; Tami Taylor whose wine glass grows larger throughout the sketch. The wine glass is used for comic relief.

The use of sexual description of female victims also acts as a method of victim blaming (Malamuth & Check, 1981). The way in which a victim is described and the details surrounding her persona play an influential role in the way she is represented. The inclusion of details of her past relationships, her appearance, whether she had been drunk or on drugs, where she had been and what her activities are often aimed to blame the victim for her attack (Meyers, 1997). In the same report on the rape accusations of Quinten Hann, The Independent published details about the female’s previous relationships, claiming “she had a one-night stand with a man in the past to get "revenge" on her boyfriend for being unfaithful” (Verkaik, 2002, n.p). Moore (2015)…
