Abstract This paper focuses on why Soft Skills are crucial and compulsory and complement hard skills, which are called technical necessities of a professional. People misinterpret/misunderstood soft skills for communication skills. It is assumed that if one’s communication skills are good, he is fit for the job. Soft Skills are more than that. These are people skills. Soft skills are individual attributes that enhance a person’s job performance, interactions and career prospects. A growing evidence base shows that these qualities rival academic or technical skills in their ability to expect employment and earnings, among other outcomes (Kautz, Heckman, Diris, ter Weel, & Borghans, 2014). As the workplace has been modernized around the world, the demand for such skills has increased over the past 20 years Nevertheless, a soft skills “gap” is noted by many employers around the world, who report that job candidates lack the soft skills needed to fill vacant positions (Manpower Group, 2013).
Job-related expertise is vital in any profession and in many other careers. However, over the last twenty to thirty years, understanding has developed that perhaps the soft skills may ultimately be more important in determining levels of success.
That is, the hard skills are a basic minimum necessary in order to operate in that particular workplace. Whether or not you are victorious in your career may depend on how you communicate to other people and to work.
