Reflective Essay: Improving The Writing Process

Through the past semester, I believe my writing has strengthened in skill and individual direction. In a similar manner, as a college freshman learns independence during their first year on campus by living away from home with less guidance, so has my writing skills. Whereas, in high school, our teachers provided us with a uniformed writing prompt with a clear argument or thesis. This semester has provided me with the skill in writing towards a specific audience with a clear position. Through this process, I was rewarded with the opportunity in learning to incorporate my voice in my writing, instead of simply to questions that were posed on a sheet of paper. In General Studies Writing 1120, a dependent writer becomes an authoritative, independent writer by being the owners of their own writings and their own inquirers. Within the last sixteen weeks, my portfolio shows a curious inquirer who takes a stand on certain issues, besides the status quo individual who believes a certain fact solely because it was informed to them by their parent, teacher or revealed through new sources. The drafting and revising process can be compared to polishing the writing assignment since I had the ability to organize the writings which provided overall clarity, the transition from one premise to another and then an overall conclusion or rebuttal. Throughout the drafting process, I was awarded the opportunity to outline the points in the appropriate order that helped shape the body of the significant piece of writing.
