In151 Reflection

Through IN151, I have seen that my writing has improved tremendously. From IN150, Dr. O’Conner hammered into his students’ heads that argumentative pieces of writing should include the author’s own voice and opinion in them, and with this, I was given the opportunity to put my own opinion in a piece of writing through taking IN151. During this semester, my peers and I went through extensive research to draft up an essay on a particular controversial issue. If anyone has ever said that writing is hard, they probably did not have to brainstorm of a topic to write on. In my opinion, this is the hardest part of any piece of writing. To elaborate on how I picked my subject, I, initially, wanted to choose a controversial issue that pertained to me. While on campus last semester, I thought that racial inclusion and diversity was a very heavy topic for Millikin as a whole, especially with the Millikin Melanin Movement. Dr. O’Conner really likes this method of introducing different sources. For a lot of the materials that I wanted to use, I did not like the use of sandwiching. Although I understood the use of it, I found this method too conventional and repetitive. It was as if the form was identical throughout the paper, and having to read this paper over and over, I found that because of the form, the paper seemed bland at times because the structure was easily foreshadowed. After I finished drafting this paper, I printed it out and cut each paragraph out. With these pieces, I creatively restructured my paper. I felt that there were ideas that I repeated, even with the outline, and I had to reorder the paragraphs so that the paper was not repetitive. I think that this also creatively allow me to authoritatively make my essay flow the way I want it to, and I felt like I had all the power in my
