According to Merriam-Webster, family can be defined as “the basic unit in society consisting of two parents rearing children”(Family). But in reality, family is much more than that. Families are people who have strong emotional connections with each other. To Live is a story about a man who experiences many misfortunes in his life. Fugui’s family is a big part of his life and once they are all gone he has no choice but to keep living without them. Throughout the story, Fugui realizes how important his family is to him. First, Fugui reflects on the time he spent with his mother. Fugui explains, “My mother really loved me, so she would work with me in the fields”(48). Hua creates a calming tone through the words “My mother”. A mother often loves her child unconditionally and never turns her back on them. Fugui's mom does her best to keep a loving and respectful relationship with her son even when he makes poor choices. Through the words “work with me” Hua creates a loving tone as Fugui's mother is taking time to help her son support their family. His mother spends time with him as they work and that time is important to her and Fugui. She can spend her time with her family and help support them at the same time. Next, while contemplating accepting money from his wife, Fugui states, “Mother’s health made me worry more”(57). Hua develops an anxious tone through the words “worry more” and illustrates the desperate situation Fugui is in. By taking money from his wife and getting a doctor, he could prolong his mother’s life. He could then continue to strengthen his relationship with his mom. Finally, Fugui states, “When she died she didn't even know where I was”(82). Through the words “didn't even know” Hua creates a dismal tone and illustrates that Fugui never got to say goodbye to his mother before she died. Fugui comes back and his mother is gone. The relationship they had no longer exists in the way it used to. He can never get her back. He can never make new memories with her. All he can do is value the time and memories he had with her when she was

Jingqiu's education requires her to undergo a strict probationary period, during which time she must fall in line with the school's tight rules and regulations, which forbid any sort of romance. Zhang work with the camera is particularly understated; small objects like washing basins and light bulbs become tokens of love when focused upon directly. One example of this is during the scene of their last moments together, when they are across the bridge from each other, there are simple colors of an overpowering green that captures both characters as they are in white. The ‘air hug’ that the two share is shown through different perspectives as the viewer sees Jingqiu’s smile at the end and wave goodbye gives meaning that she hopes to see him again while Lao San’s expression is that of sadness as he is still postponed in that hug and his arms shaking. The muted colors employed by director of photography Zhao Xiaoding complement the film's quiet and subtle style as well as focusing on main points.…
