As Junsuke is walking back to the house after school some bullies start picking on him. Haruo sees this, comes over and beats up the bullies, “Neigh like a horse! ‘Whinny’!... Okay now say ‘pussy’! Say it!... Take that!” (Matsumoto 68). Haruo does not appreciate those kids picking on his foster brother. He loves him like a brother and would protect him like a brother. When he sees the two kids start to bully Junsuke for being in a foster home, Haruo goes over to them and starts beating them so that they stop picking on Junsuke. Megumu sees the cat lying dead in the water and starts to wonder if she will end up like the stray cat. Haruo bikes by and sees Megumu. She points out the cat and wants to give the cat a burial. So Haruo goes down to the cat. Megumu then tells Haruo about her fear, “Do you think it’ll be like this when I die?... Like if a car knocked me in the river and no one found me,” (Matsumoto 105). Haruo then comforters her by responding with, “I’ll find you and make a big grave for you!! I ain’t no stranger!! I’ll find you!!” (Matsumoto 107). These kids are orphans they see this stray cat that is all alone and treat it like another orphan by giving it a burial. Just like Megumu, they are all afraid to die alone, but as Haruo pointed out they have each other. The foster home kids are family to each other.
