Nation, Paul. "Reading Faster", International Journal of English. 2009, Vol. 9, p. 131+.
In Reading Faster, Nation describes an array of various processes non-native English speakers can practice to develop their reading fluency.
He begins by introducing three common occurrences when reading: fixating on different words, eyes jumping to the next text to focus on or "saccades," and going back to reread something or "regressions." Though these occurrences are normal, varying degrees of intensity, however, can hinder reading speeds.

Skimming and scanning, as he describes, are methods of "expeditious reading," better understood as reading fast and efficiently. Skimming is used to ascertain the meaning or "gist" of a text, while scanning is used to search for specific details. Nation recommends spending more time developing skimming speed as "training in scanning is unlikely to result in more fluent access to items."

In Speed Strategies, Lewis explains the concept of speed-reading and how it can impact people's lives for the better. As many people take in a significant amount of information, with most of it is in written form, Lewis claims speed-reading as a method that helps improve efficiency and "provide them with a real edge in a competitive world."
Fixations, as Lewis describes as pauses and jumps one makes when reading, are a major factor that determines reading speed. Speed-reading seeks to diminish the time spent on each fixation and instead, absorb more words.
Speed-reading is not only about reading faster, but also reading better. With the added benefit, Lewis says speed-reading enables people to read more words at once as well as preserve
