Reaction Stoichiometry Lab Report

Introduction Section- The purpose of this experiment is to use reaction stoichiometry to determine the molar mass and the identity of an unknown, powdered metal, and to identify an unknown metal nitrate solution. To give a little background information on this experiment I will start by saying that a balanced chemical equation provides several important pieces of information about a chemical equation. Those important pieces include the substances consumed and formed, the physical states of the reactants and products, the reaction conditions, and the relative amounts of reactants and products involved in the reaction. During this experiment my group will be working towards identifying the molar mass of an unknown metal as well as identifying …show more content…
Gathered materials to compete the lab.
Place 10 mL of 1.0 HCl in beaker and add 90 mL water and use the pH meter (Station) measure pH of solution
Put a magnetic stir in beaker, and place one or two pieces into solution until the pH is 3.5
Measure the mass of of the remaining metal and determine the molar mass of the unknown metal with the given formula
For part B add 10 mL of unknown solution (0.05) and add 20 mL of water, 5 drops of indicator, magnetic stir
Use the pH meter for after completing previous step

Over the course of the experiment, my group was able to discover what exactly what were the unknown metals were. In order to do that we had to complete the steps for each part and eventually calculate what the molar masses were for each part in order to correctly determine what the metals were. Continuing, we also noticed that part A and B differed in terms of what the unknown metals turned out to be for each one. Part A's unknown metal eventually was found to be beryllium, while part B's unknown metal was determined to be Barium. In closing, after following the steps and performing the calculations using the formulas we were able to determine that the two unknown metals were Beryllium and

The reason for this was because if the solid conducted, it could automatically be determined that the solid was a metal and had metallic bonds. Of the unknowns that were tested, unknown 10 and unknown 11 were the only two that were able to be identified as having metallic bonds right away. The remaining ten unknowns were then put in a test tube and held over boiling water to see whether or not they would melt at or below 100C. The only solid that ended up melting was unknown 12. This then led to the conclusion that unknown 12 had the bond nonpolar covalent.…

Lab 14/ Test 6: Determination of Acid Dissociation Constants through Titration Sabrina Tom I.Abstract The two unknown solutions A and E were titrated with NaOH solutions. For each solution, one fast and three slow titrations were done to see where the pH rose exponentially. The unknown solutions A and E were determined to be Pyridinium ion acid and oxalic acid, respectively. II.Theories One significant concept throughout this lab is titrations. A titration is a lab method analyzes a solution of a known concentration to determine the concentration of a known solution.…

The goal of this laboratory experiment was to determine the identity of an unknown ionic compound, unknown sample 3, through the substance’s chemical properties and reactivity. This compound was discovered in a landfill and we needed to know as much information as we can about how the chemical will behave in different situations so that the city will not be negatively affected by the chemical.2 Thus, we first needed to identify the unknown substance, determine some of its chemical properties and reactivity, and also its synthesis.1 To accomplish this goal, we carried out five tests, the conductivity, solubility, cation, and anion tests because they revealed the identity of unknown sample 3.3 In addition, we carried out five reactions, reacting…

20 ml of 5% stacking gel solution was prepared. A 100 ml beaker was selected and labeled as stacking gel solution. To the beaker 11.5 ml of water was added plus 3.3 ml of 30% Acrylamide. Once all the solution were added to the beaker it was let aside in order to prepared the 4x stacking gel buffer needed to be added to the beaker. To make the desired buffer, another 100 ml beaker was used to prepare a solution buffer of 50 ml.…

A stir bar was added into the flask containing isoborneol, and the flask was attached to a ring stand to rest on top of a magnetic stirrer device. In consistent drops, 0.63 mL of glacial acetic was added and the reaction had a pH of 2, which was measured with pH indicator paper. Then, 0.50 mL of 10% w/v sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution was added, and the reagents were reacted for three minutes. Shortly after, 5.13 mL of 10% w/v NaOCl was added incrementally with a Pasteur pipet for about ten minutes. A thermocouple was periodically placed on the outside of the flask to make sure that the mixture did not reach past 50 °C.…

Gravimetric Analysis of a Metal Carbonate Purpose The purpose of this lab is to find the mass of an unknown metal by conducting a double-displacement precipitation reaction, which is our gravimetric analysis. Once we find the precipitate mass, we can then find the molar mass by using the molar ratio given in the reaction equation. Procedure First, we set up the ring stand with a Bunsen burner, put a crucible on top of the pipe stem triangle and heated the crucible for a minute, then let it cool down. We then massed the crucible and added two grams of the unknown carbonate to the crucible, then recorded its combined mass. We then repeatedly heated, cooled, and massed the crucible until the mass of the crucible and the unknown carbonate no…

One drop of carbonyl compound was added each to a 1ml of Tollen’s reagent, which was already made, in a test tube. The tubes were shaken to mix the solution and timed for 10 minutes while being observed for any changes. If the test was negative, solutions were then heated in a boiling water bath for 5 minutes in order to see how they will change after…

Through this use, the calorimeter constant can be calculated, as well as the heat capacity of the system of the calorimeter. These various techniques are all put to use to calculate for unknown values that do not appear in a standard table or entry. It is the study of calorimetry that makes it all possible. Hence, in this experiment, a bomb calorimeter will be used to determine the change in energy and the change in enthalpy of naphthalene. These two values are the goal for the experiment and through the manipulation of the data, they will be achieved.…

The procedure was followed for the solution that used 1ml of Sodium thiosulfate and 2mL of the other chemicals. A 500mL beaker was filled with ice water and a thermometer was placed inside the water to record the temperature. When the temperature reached 2.3 degrees Celsius the solution was placed inside and the KI was then added into the solution. The hot beaker was placed onto the hot plate to slowly increase the temperature until it reached 18.7 degrees Celsius where a new solution was placed inside again. This repeated for 18.7, 35.0, and 51.6 degrees…
