Wayne Joseph, a 51 year old man who has lived his whole life as a black man, found out he wasn’t actually black. Erin Aubry Kaplan said, “Joseph was 57 percent Indo-European, 39 percent Native American, 4 percent East Asian and zero percent African”(136). This data shows us that Joseph had zero African American ancestors. He is more white than he is black, but was only considered black because of the color of his skin. Indians are also dark compared to East Asians, but they are both Asians. My friend Rajeev Upadhyaya said “My family skin color has been dark leading back to my great great grandmother”. His great grandmother believed that their ancestors were dark in skin color and it was passed down through generations. She also believes that the color of their skin doesn’t make them any less Asian. Like Indians and East Asians, African American skin can be a dark tone or a light tone. Deshawn Carter, an old high school friend, hates it when people say he is not black because he doesn’t have dark black skin. Both of his parents were light skin, so there is nothing he can do about it because it’s genetics. He thinks he doesn’t have any dark skin ancestors and that they were all light skin. Deshawn skin is light brown, but he still consider himself black because he believes he doesn’t need dark black skin to be Black. I don’t think skin color should be one of the
