Programming languages have been being developed for the past 70 to 80 years. There are hundreds of different types of languages that are designed to do a vast amount of tasks. Many of these languages are built off one another. Even new languages are still being developed today. In the following, the past four decades will be examined to discover the five most popular programming language of that decade.
In the 1970s is when some of our most popular languages, that we even still use today, were created. Pascal was one of the first languages created in this decade by Niklaus Wirth in 1970. This language was “originally designed for teaching programming” (Gaddis, 2012). Another language developed in 1970 by Charles H. Moore was Forth. “Originally developed for small embedded control mini- and micro-computers, Forth seems to have been implemented on every major processor manufactured. It has been used in a wide variety of applications, including spreadsheets, expert systems, multi-user databases, and distributed real time control systems” (Philip J. Koopman, 1993). One of the most popular programming languages starting out was C. C was created by Dennis Ritchie in 1972. “The design goals of C were to provide a simple procedural language for programming Operating Systems, with direct access to memory, a small library, efficient execution and reasonably portability; certainly more so than Assembly Language” (Bolton, n.d.). Prolog, one of the first logic programming languages, was…
