Before taking music 111, I only know little about music with few preconceptions. First preconceived idea which I hold was players who can play by ear are naturally genius or just a special gift. However, from the lecture, “Oral Tradition” and Lilliestam’s article I got the idea how the players can play by ear. In his article, "On Playing By Ear", Lars Lilliestam compared music to spoken language. He described as if we learn a variety of phrases, we can use the language in certain situation. Same for music, if players learn chord progression and forms, they can use repertoire and able to play by ear. Also, it was astonish to see how twelve bar blues can be played in thousands of song. Second preconception was that I do not know the reasons for the radio stations play almost same playlist over hundreds of …show more content…
I thought and learned from today’s society that singing is only for people for expert professional performers for my entire life. However, I was impressed by reading the one of Levitin’s statement, "Throughout most of the world and for most of human history, music making was as natural an activity as breathing and walking, and everyone participated." And the fact all humans can make and participate in music making. I was one too who become shy and feel like my voice or dancing is not good enough to perform in public. I was also stunned by the quote where the villagers told Jim, "What do you mean you don't sing?! You talk!" In Levitin Excerpt, it kept saying anyone who can talk can sing, and dance will come along the singing. I realized that I have a packed full of stereotype on music. Overall, this online class went well and had much information that I would like to learn. I also liked the video and the lecture. It would be better if we get some lecture about the last three assigned chapters instead of getting just quiz, for I had hard time understanding the new terms of

I have read and understand the syllabus, calendar, and addendums. I understand that there are deadlines poster on the calendar that must be met and that there will be no extensions for any assignments. I do not have that many expectations for the class other than to learn statistical methods for collecting data. As for the organization of the class I am grateful to have the entire week to work on chapters instead of certain days. In my experience online classes are extremely organized and easy to use so I am hoping this course can supply us with the information easily.…

Romick from the Virginia Journal of Education talks about how the use of music to teach English can be extremely beneficial to students by bettering and understanding the material. Romick uses instances from his own experiences, knowledge, and extensive career in teaching to talk about the great benefits that music has in the learning and retention abilities of the developing minds of children. Although this great article is that there isn’t really anything scientific or any other external researches to support what Romick is explaining in this article, I still think we can learn a lot from the article…

In chapter six titled Music, Music, Music, the author discussed the importance of musical development, musical intelligence, components of music, selecting appropriate music, instruments, and making music. Musical development spans from infancy to primary grades. Isabelle and Raines (2012) stated that “understanding the unique characteristics of young children during specific developmental periods can provide a framework for developing a responsive curriculum,” (p. 187). Musical intelligence refers to the ability to understand pitch, melody, and rhythm at an advanced degree. Once children began to explore music with instruments, they begin to make music using chants, lullabies, songs, and body parts.…

I've really found these few chapters of this course fascinating. This chapter in general has really made me think back on several things and really tapped into my spirituality. One of the things that stood out to me in this lesson is when Occam's Razor made the statement that Explanations should always be kept as simple as possible. I find myself agreeing with him because people tend to make things more complicated than it needs to be. Another statement of Occam's Razor that I liked was when he spoke on God.…

There have always been environmental problems and there have always been problems with people trying to solve an issue but stopping soon after they realize it will cost money. Susan Kattwinkel took An Enemy of the People and collaborated with the costumer Margaret Lavigne in a different and interesting way. With the use of projections, they took each scene and designed the costumes to different decades. The play originally was supposed to take place in the late 1800s, which is what they use in the first scene.…

Even though it is possible for students to have outbreaks of temper tantrums, it should be noted that those using music therapy with students who have disabilities are fully qualified to help keep children safe and calm. These people are professionals and have been trained to help children who have temper tantrums. They are capable of calming these students down, and they help them return to a state of either pleasant or neutral feelings. The continuation of funding for these programs are important to students who are disabled. Music therapy helps them communicate when they are unable to use words.…

The course AFAS 160 D1 is my first online class, and until now I still felt lucky to choose this class as one of my general education classes, because it gave me a great opportunity and an eye-opening experience about learning the African American Culture which I have never learned before and also gave me a chance to learn online. Describing this course to someone else, I would say this class is interesting and if you want to learn this class well, you need to prepare the Voice Thread and read the book carefully. To be honest, making videos on Voice Thread gave me a unique experience. I still remembered the first time I made a video on Voice Thread how nervous I was, I was afraid to have different ideas with other students and worried if they disagreed with me what should I do?…
