In South Africa, the private and public health systems exist in parallel. The public health system serves the majority of the population, whereas only the wealthiest of the population make use of private health care. It is common knowledge that the public health system in South Africa is chronically underfunded and understaffed and the private system is far better served. Today, there are over 200 private hospitals in South Africa (Stevens, 2008:267).

What makes the Mediclinic group unique in comparison with its competitors within the healthcare industry, is that they offer cost-effective quality healthcare. Compared to their competitors, they offer more affordable healthcare, in order to make it more accessible and affordable to customers.

The Mediclinic brand is one that is well known and has a good reputation in South Africa and internationally. This brand image lends an advantage to the group with their new services, as it will be reassurance to existing customers and attract new customers. Mediclinic is favoured by customers, as is evident from Discovery Health’s patients’’ ratings of South Africa’s private hospitals. According to the survey, Mediclinic’s across the country took up 9 of the 20 best hospital positions (Human, 2015).

Mediclinic customers’ loyalty is another competitive advantage. The group already has many loyal customers, which they provide services to.
