Allyson Emma Kochanek—Artistic Statement Application: Desiring an MFA in Design at the University of North Carolina School of the arts.

I believe art is about regeneration. It is about taking something blank, limp, and lifeless and giving it breath. We were created to create. Through our creativity we can instill new ideas, images, and dreams. Art does not simply play on the surface of society but seeps into the dirty crevices commenting on politics, depravity, and religion. I believe the artist has one of the loudest podiums; reaching people who can barely grasp the hard realities of life but are able to be affected by the familiar or the bizarre. Like the great James Baldwin once said, “The role of the artist is exactly the same as the role of the lover, if I love you, I have to make you conscious of the things you don’t see.”

A blank face is my canvas. I believe makeup transforms the individual and prods the imagination. Much like theatre, makeup comes alive and is new every time. The first time someone put a makeup sponge in my hand and showed me the intricate process of design I knew I wanted to be an artist. I don’t find my catharsis on paper, with paints, or even in wood with power tools, precise measurements, and sketches. I find my home in vast amounts of brushes, creams, powders, and prosthetics. I never knew makeup could possess such revolutionizing power. I believe for an actor, acting is far more then pretending it is embodying and pouring yourself into a…
