Five Week Reflection

The age group that I have selected to work with for the five-week outline is the Pre-K group. I chose this age group because as an educator I am passionate about providing adolescent children with learning establishments in fundamental subjects. In my classroom the (DAP) developmentally appropriate practices would be implemented in my lesson plans. Every child learns and develops differently, therefore my curriculum will reflect tactics that best fits each child's developmental needs. In my classroom, it is essential that I use and incorporate Theories, Philosophies, and Concepts in my curriculum appropriately in order for the children in my care to be successful. The first theory I chose and envision myself using in my future classroom/ …show more content…
The planning idea that I would use to support the learning of this standard is to plan/ conduct simple investigations and have the children try and guess the outcome of an experiment and make accurate predictions about an experiment. I would also ask open-ended questions to promote further investigations. Asking open-ended questions helps with problem-solving and it promotes children's learning of their world. Also, open-ended questions are a more useful strategy to practice to promote critical thinking and learning. The third content standard that I have chosen is the Approaches to Learning through Play – Constructing, Organizing, and Applying Knowledge(Arts). The planning idea that I would use to support the learning of this standard is to encourage outdoor exploration and then have discussions and open-ended questions. Also, I can provide props in the dramatic play area that goes along with a topic or theme being taught for that …show more content…
In this science activity, children get the opportunity to make a concoction reaction, they also get to explore mixing of colors and make some beautiful "work of art"! In this academic area, I would use the Reggio Emilia Approach because as an educator it is important for me to provide an environment that is engaging and one that is facilitated appropriately. Children get the opportunity to experiment, explore and test solutions and form their own ideas of how things work.
Science- Explore nature game. The second activity is "Wind Exploration". The area is set up with a tray that has a car on it. In addition, there is a straw, paper, clay, and some toothpicks. The goal is to move the car on the tray by blowing it with a straw and without touching it.
Arts- have the children draw a picture and have them describe their picture. In this academic area, materials are made accessible to the children throughout the day. This creates an opportunity for children to express themselves, use their imagination and

Sadly, I haven’t observed much science when I worked as a SPED assistant. Science was usually linked to ELA block, and I think I can remember just three hands-on activities that students performed. The first one was observing butterflies metamorphosis, another was planting seeds, and the last one was building towers using construction paper, spaghetti and tape. In other cases, it was a teacher who conducted the experiment, and children just observed and wrote notes. I noticed that students were very engaged and excited when they were allowed to actually use their hands and try new things, so I will definitely use this knowledge in the future when teaching science.…

Rationale: Standard seven means that I have the ability to to plan my instructions with being being able to meet every students needs. The artifact I have selected for standard seven, is the Osmosis Lesson Plan. I selected this artifact because it reflects on the different adaptions and modifications I would have set up for my students within one lesson for that subject. Another reason why I chose this artifact is because I was able to provide my students with a hands-on science lab, while being able to get the full leaning ability.…

In the article, “Uncovering Student’s Concept of Matter”, author Paige Keeley discusses the importance of helping students understand the concepts of matter. Keeley states that while children form their own concepts of matter at an early age, they still need assistance on the harder more abstract concepts. There were three main strengths that I found in the article: first the teacher must listen to the students and their ideas concerning matter, then the teacher should provide students examples of different types of matter and gather their feedback on those and lastly remind the students to use the different types of evidence to show that matter exists. The reason I chose listening to the students as a strength is because I feel that it is important to see what the students already know so that you know where to start in teaching them.…

In 99 Ideas and Activities for Teaching English Learners with the SIOP Model, MaryEllen Vogt and Jana Echevarria offer research-based and verified techniques for putting together SIOP lessons. These ideas and activities are aimed at promoting differentiated instruction in the classroom and include new approaches to lesson planning and activities as well as numerous familiar, time-tested ideas that simply serve to remind teachers of the tools and methodologies they have at their disposal. While all of the ideas they present are useful for any classroom teacher, not just those who work with ELL students, and can be adopted or not based on students’ needs and teaching style, there is a key component that is essential for success no matter what:…

There are some challenges to hands on and cross-curricular learning, within our activity we came across some areas that could have been developed, Hayes (2010) argues that hands on learning its heavily resourced. We agreed with this as the amount of resources we had available were limited. We also didn’t ensure we had planned for a child with a medical need, and therefore had to re arrange the activity a quarter of the way through the lesson to ensure she could join in. One key area that we identified was that children became more involved with the way the house looked in a creative sense, rather than the scientific reasoning. This challenge is also identified by Jarvis (2009) who expresses that one of the risks to cross-curricular learning is that one subject takes over in response to children’s enthusiasm and interest, this is of a loss to the other subject.…

These five domains consist of physical, cognitive, language, emotional, and social learning. My lesson plans start with objectives in mind when meeting all these developmental domains. My goal is to create activities that encourage a child to identify what the lesson involves, discuss openly the child’s perspective, deduce the content of the lesson, and apply the knowledge learned. I also believe that all children need the opportunity to make their own choices, even the choice to participate in learning. With this in mind, planning activities to keep the children engaged is of great importance to me.…

Chester Elementary Teachers Preparation for Outdoor Core/NGSS Rollout Over the last three years, Chester teachers, Kellie Bainbridge, Janae LaGroue, Aletha O’Kelley, Meghan Whalen, Brooke Geer, Nicholle Crowther, Susan Tantardino, and Camille Klimek, have taken on a huge responsibility in our district, by agreeing to pilot Next Generation Science Standards ( NGSS).They have been the pioneers willing to dissect and deconstruct NGSS to create a curriculum guide and instructional plans that would be specifically suited to Plumas County. In 2013, the California Department of Education adopted new science standards to update and improve the framework for educating generations of science-literate students. However, the NGSS framework and core ideas were created with the flexibility for local educators to adopt a unique strategy to best fit their school’s needs and strengths.…

In the Pre-K classroom that I observed it consisted of several different centers for the children to participate in, such as: block area, dramatic play, art, library, sand/water table, music/movement, sensory area, finger painting, play dough, and the students got the opportunity to make their own snacks. Not only did the students get to participate in centers, they had the opportunity each day to go outside and play on the playground as well as having an interactive lecture every morning at circle time and when the students sat down at their tables to do their daily worksheet. I believe that the Pre-K class I observed was a mix between traditional teaching as well as constructivism, creating a balance between the two. In the morning during circle time, the teacher would “lecture” the students with the letter of the day, go over the date, months, days of the week, shapes, and the numbers up to the date it currently was.…

Critical Essay 1 Even though the majority of students in the Rio Grande Valley are Hispanic, there is still diversity in our community. We need to be aware of the different socioeconomic backgrounds that students come from and make sure that we provide as much as we can to all of our students so that no one is singled out and embarrassed about needing help. For example; I remember being provided the tri-fold poster for the science fair in elementary school, then suddenly one year we had to get it ourselves. When I asked my parents they did not have any extra money to splurge on this so they bought me a regular, white, poster board for fifty cents and at the science fair.…

After developing an introduction it is time to get to the main aspect of lesson planning, the learning activities. This is how a teacher presents the information and explains it to his or her class. It is important for teachers to plan multiple ways of explaining each topic in case the students are having difficulty grasping the information. The next is developing a way to test the students understanding whether it be asking them simple questions at the end of a lecture or creating an assignment for them to do. The last step to developing a lesson plan guideline is creating a conclusion and a preview for the next lesson.…

A science conception that I would make into a fun activity is that all metals are attracted to magnets. I would have my scientists work in groups and each group would have different pieces of metals. The students would use a chart to fill in which metals were attracted to the magnet and which were not. I would then ask the students to write a story together about the different metal pieces, making each piece of metal a different character. In the story the students must implement which metals did not attract to the magnets.…
