Video Games: The Positive Outlook
Everywhere you look today, you see a child or teenager playing a video game. They can play games on their cell phone, their hand-held video gaming system, a tablet/laptop, home computer, or home video game device such as Xbox or PlayStation. An astounding 91% of all children play video games (Granic, Lobel, & Engels, 2014, p. 66). Video games have become a huge part of children’s lives with 97% playing for at least an hour a day. Although most research shows the negative aspects of video games, research that is more recent has shown many positive aspects of game play. New research has gradually began to emerge showing the many benefits to playing video games. Can our children possibly better themselves

They believe children sit alone in their room eating junk food and are lazy. This is not the case. Video game players are not anti-social or sitting alone in their rooms all the time (Granic et al., 2014, p. 72). Most children play video games online or with friends. Many video games on the market today allow children to play with other people through an internet connection and speak to them through a microphone. Many boys that play video games report by playing online video games, they can meet and talk with people from all different areas of the world (Granic et al., 2014, p. 73). Many studies have shown that playing action and shooting video games can improve several aspects of vision. One specific article (Granic et al., 2014, p. 68) reports playing action video games may increase and improve a player’s attention to detail and visual processing ability. Video games are being used to help children with Amblyopia, which is poor vision to one eye. The games can improve the child’s eyesight and in some cases return the vision to normal (Eichenbaum et al., 2014, p. 55). My middle child has Amblyopia and video games were used in the rehabilitation of his left eye. He had to wear a patch on his dominant eye while performing some type of hand to eye coordination. This activity helps train the brain to use the eye with poor sight and improve the vision. The optometrist recommended that my child play video games during patch times because of the constant coordination needed during game play. My son’s Amblyopia improved to his eye from 20/100 vision to 20/60 vision. A research study published in 2013 reports children who play action video games have similar improvements in visual processing abilities as classes designed to teach these abilities at the high school and college level (Uttal et al., 2013). Another research study suggests that video games allow people to maintain visual information for a small amount of time (Blacker & Curby, 2014). Improved
