Video that games promote mutual understanding and tolerance will likely leave a positive impression on the people who play them. In the compelling article "Playing Games with a Conscience," author Daniel Terdiman focuses on games that essentially force players to look at a person's situation from their dreadful perspective. The game featured in the article, September 12th, forces players to feel empathy for the innocent Afghani bystanders who are killed along with the terrorists. The bystanders eventually become terrorists themselves after seeing the rampant death and destruction of their village and people. September 12th encourages the understanding and tolerance of different cultures, because the game helps players understand why some people are forced to make the choices that they make. Despite that notion that the majority of video games are violent, “there are a growing number of games that promote positive messages and mutual understanding” (Terdiman 408). Certain video games bring different types of people together in the sense that “players work together based on their skills, without focusing on their gender, age, nationality (or) religion” (Terdiman 409).
