He said in a joking yet serious manner,
“I see, I see, Rodion Romanovitch, you are laughing at a civilian like me, taking examples out of military history! But I can’t help it, it’s my weakness. I am fond of military science.”
Porfiry is reassuring him of his sophistication while slightly hinting at Raskolnikov's theories from his recently published article.
Suddenly things went haywire when Nikoli arrived at the front door of Porfiry’s office while being backed away by several officers. One thing led to another and came Nikoli’s confession. I was baffled by the fact and so were Porfiry and Raskolnikov. The next day, I went to Raskolnikov's room and apologized to him saying,
‘I was vexed. When you came, perhaps in drink, and bade the porters go to the police station and asked about the blood, I was vexed that they let you go and took you for drunken. I was so vexed that I lost my sleep. And remembering the address we came here yesterday and asked for you….’
I believe I made the right decision by asking for forgiveness, and that was the last I’ve heard about any of this fascinating yet unpredictable
