Play Vs Short Story

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County play versus the short story had many contrasts. Yet, there were characteristics that differed between the two media forms. The setting, theme, plot, characters, and conflict are each a bit different between the forms of the highly-recognized story. The setting of two stories contrast in a couple of ways. To begin with, the play opens right in the old west. The short story, on the contrary, begins at Angel’s Mining Camp. The time period between the two forms of the story are very similar, each take place around 1850. Likewise, both of the stories have similar weather. The weather is calm, there is no rain, and you can imagine a nice sunshine beating on the old, western streets. These similarities help connect the two stories. The short story had two stories within one, while the play only had the one story. Moreover, the play didn’t describe Andrew Jackson’s last fight. Further, the play didn’t have much of an ending, it ended with Jim Smiley running off the stage. Despite these differences, the two forms of the story shared some parts of the plot. The play had a character who didn’t exist in the short story. She was off to the side like a narrator, but she also played a part in the story. For instance, she collected the money that was wagered. The short story had a couple of different characters as well. It had Simon Wheeler as a character. Though the play had a narrator, it was not Simon Wheeler. Another contrast existing between the two forms of the story would be that Jim Smiley was developed in different ways. By reading the short story, Smiley was portrayed as a older, risky man.
