Many movies and works of literature today are ones that claim to be “based on a true story”. While that may be the case, these pieces are never what actually occurred, thanks to the fact that authors and directors take creative liberties with the stories in order to enhance them. If one examines a historical document such as a sermon by Puritan John Edwards and compares it to The Crucible (a tale about The Puritans) or A Summer Life by Gary Soto, they will see that they are different, yet similar. Understanding historical pieces as such before watching or reading something based on it leads to a transparent view of what occurred. Having a skewed perspective on these historical happenings may lead to incorrect statements being made and in The…

Acts 5:3 “But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?” The Holy Spirit must have revealed to Peter that Ananias was lying, therefore he asked him why he lied. I have heard it said that Ananias would not have been asked this question if he was a lost sinner, as Peter would have known that it is the way of the ungodly to not tell the truth. I find it at least reasonable to believe he was saved but Satan filled his heart to lie.…

As one once said, “Take everything with a grain of salt”. This statement proves useful when dealing with historical film adaptations, in particular, The Crucible (1996). Some dispute whether the historical interpretations of the film bare some truth or exploit historical inaccuracies for modern entertainment. Even though The Crucible (1996) contained accurate depictions when it came to general information about the subject of the film, minor details lack similar accuracy. Therefore, making this book the film adaptation an invalid, unreliable historical interpretation about the 1692 Salem witch trials.…

Literature is a wonderful thing; it explores the relationships between humans and their nature, historical events, and can be used to express one’s creativity. It can also be used to give moral guidance; this was Arthur Miller’s reasoning behind writing The Crucible. In this dramatic retelling of the Salem trials, Miller ensnares his reader with stories of adultery, betrayal, and material greed. His intention, however, is not to entertain with operatic drama. This play is a cautionary tale about finger pointing and its potentially fatal consequences.…

One example of a substantial difference is in the play, Paris, Juliet’s fiance, comes to visit her dead body when Romeo comes to kill himself; Romeo and Paris fight and Paris dies as well and asks Romeo, “Open the tomb, lay me with Juliet” (V.iii.73). In the movie, not only does Paris not die, but he never even comes to visit Juliet in the tomb. This changes the viewer’s perspective of the story because Paris plays a smaller role in the story since his main part was when he comes to visit Juliet and is killed. Also, the reader may get a different perspective of Paris’ love for Juliet since he never comes to visit her; in the play, his love seems genuine because he comes to visit her but it seems more fake in the movie since he does nothing when she dies. Another difference from the play to the movie is that Friar Lawrence gives a large summary about the entire play both Romeo and Juliet’s families come to see their bodies.…
