In The Crucible, John Proctor and Abigail Williams had a secret love affair without anyone realizing what was happening, but this is not possible for one leading reason which is the age difference between Proctor and Williams. Proctor was at the age of 60 at the time of the trials(not mid-40 's) and Williams was around the age of 11, not 17 like how the movie portrayed her to produce the idea of an affair more realistic. Also, the relationship was built to push the plot along and make the movie more interesting. Another false relationship in the film presented is in the relationship between Williams and Elizabeth Proctor. In the film, Proctor hired Williams to assist her around the house, then terminated her from the job. The film makes the point that since Williams got fired and is having an affair with John Proctor is the reason why she accuses Elizabeth of being a witch, both of which are false. First, Williams had no relations to the Proctor 's and in fact, the servant that the Proctor 's hired was Mary Warren(who was also a part of the trials). Second, there was no specific reason for Williams to accuse Proctor since there is no relation between them. A third false relationship that is minor in the film is between Williams and Reverend Paris; the film stated that Williams was Paris ' niece, but there is no record of them being related. Although, some might say that the addition of the false relationships does not change the historical accuracies in The Crucible. This is true, but it does change the meaning of the historical context of the film; instead of the message of survival being shown through it 's being covered with a message of revenge due to the false love
