The video released by an anti-abortion group–the Center of Medical Process–left the impression that Nucatola is talking about Planned Parenthood affiliates selling fetal tissues from abortions for a profit. However, this edited and negligent video ignores the facts of what Nucatola actually said during the conversation. In the unedited version of the same video, Nucatola clearly states that, “‘Affiliates are not looking to make money by [selling fetal tissue]. They’re looking to serve their patients and just make it not impact their bottom line’” (Levitan). While the “sale” of organs, both adult and fetal, for transplantation is entirely illegal, the donation of tissue and the payment for the“reasonable” costs of the conducted procedure is legal, and that is what is occurring within Planned Parenthood. Therefore all allegations of illegal practices committed by Planned Parenthood are completely inaccurate. The Center of Medical Process, an anti-abortion group, has several times advocated for Planned Parenthood’s federal funding to be revoked, even though federal money isn’t actually used to fund abortions. Therefore, the edited video’s misrepresentation of the facts was another way the anti-abortion group tried to stir up trouble for Planned Parenthood. And it worked.Within the past month, Republicans have pushed the Defund Planned Parenthood Act, passing in the House of Representatives through their own majority and with a 241 to 187 vote. The bill’s purpose was to defund all Planned Parenthood clinics for one year that provide abortions, with the money going to the clinics that do not offer that service. Representative Diane Black, the sponsor of the defunding bill, talked about the importance of the passing of this bill, stating that, …show more content…
Furthermore, abortion services only make up 3% of Planned Parenthood’s total services provided: 327,653 abortion procedures out of 10.6 million services. To cut funding to an organization that provides essential healthcare people in the U.S. as well as over 1 million outside the country would have detrimental effects ("2013-2014 Annual Report."). As pointed out by democrats, “other health-care providers would be unable to absorb all of Planned Parenthood’s hundreds of thousands of patients” (DeBonis). Thus, the conservative Republican's presumptions that Planned Parenthood is all about abortions, and they therefore need to be defunded, are completely uneducated and ignorant of the
