Dating back to October 16, 1916, Margaret Sanger opened the first birth control clinic in the U.S. Soon after, she was arrested and accused of supplying indecent materials to women. In 1938, the clinic officially became the American Birth Control League, and by 1944, had over 200 functioning centers and a significant amount of clients—upwards of around forty-thousand. Many at the time found the operation’s name offensive, and Sanger changed it to what we all know today as the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA). The PPFA was initially a safe and confidential clinic for underprivileged women to gain insight on contraception guidance. After one hundred years, their main goal is to continue to improve women’s health, despite conflicting…

In February of 2012; Senator Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) asked a very poignant and appropriate question before walking out of a House oversight committee hearing on contraceptive coverage. Angrily, she asked "What I want to know is, where are the women? I look at this panel [of witnesses], and I don't see one single individual representing the tens of millions of women across the country who want and need insurance coverage for basic preventive health care services, including family planning.” That one question propelled into motion a women’s rights movement not seen since the 1960’s and 70’s—and awakened a sleeping giant I am quite sure the Republican party is now kicking themselves over.…

Rather than applauding the lies and empty promises of self-interested politicians at the inauguration (even / especially in a hypothetical Clinton victory), it was a decentralized movement, a coming together of indigenous activists, socialists, anti-fascists, BLM, anti-capitalists, and young people. It was a beautiful display of unity, comradary, public art, dissent, and of the will of the people to move beyond our broken political system to make the…

Women’s rights has been an issue in the United States since the early 1800’s and until all people are comfortable discussing the fact that in many parts of the world, women have no say in what they can do with their bodies or how it’s treated. A woman should be the only one who can decide what is best for her body. There is only so much that women can do when the one place that helps women with checkups and abortion based questions, Planned Parenthood, is being defunded or closed down. “The House of Representatives is expected to pass a budget reconciliation bill that guts the Affordable Care Act, pulls roughly $450 million in federal assistance from Planned Parenthood and prevents Medicaid recipients from getting reimbursed…
