Pig kidney dissection
Purpose
By cutting open the pig kidney, to figure out the following parts: capsule, cortex, medulla, pyramid, papilla, column, major calyx, minor calyx, hilus, renal artery, renal vein, pelvis, sinus and ureter of the kidney.
Hypothesis
If we dissect a pig kidney, then we will find many similarities to the human kidney because we have learned that mammalian kidneys are similar.
Experiment
Background: The urinary system is one of the biggest and the most important system in human body which contains two kidneys, two ureters, urinary bladder, and one urethra. This system is in charge of two basic functions. One is to remove nitrogenous wastes from the body, and the other one is to maintain the ion, pH, and water levels in the blood.
One of the products made by this system is urine, which is a yellowish fluid containing water, and …show more content…

Analysis and Conclusion
The hypothesis is true. As the Mammal animal, pig has similar kidney to human kidney. The structure is the same and both contains capsule, cortex, medulla, pyramid, papilla, column, major calyx, minor calyx, hilus, renal artery, renal vein, pelvis, sinus and ureter
As the pig kidney was prepared before the dissection, it can be seen the vein and the artery goes through the whole organ. (blue is the vein and red is the artery)
There are a couple of pyramids in a kidney and there are arranged in line along the shape of the organ.
Compare the sized of the vessels. The renal artery is bigger than renal vein
Kidney is one of the paired organ that can still support the body with one removed. Most people who are born with only one kidney (or with only one functioning kidney) lead normal, healthy lives.
