Many heroes are shown as strong and powerful warriors that save a kingdom from monsters and destruction. Not all heroes are that way however. Some heroes seem to be the opposite of heroic as well such as Bilbo Bagons from “The Hobbit” or Daniel Crawford from “Asylum”. Out of all the heroes one seems to stand out the most. Phoenix Jackson from “A Worn Path” is an elderly woman who travels a far distance alone to get medicine for her grandson. “What makes her a hero?” someone might ask. What she really wants is comfort in thinking that her grandson still has hope. The readers are unsure if this boy is even alive.”He isn’t dead, is he?”(53) as she seems to be defensive about this. The medicine helps her feel that he is still with her but if she told them he died they would stop giving her the medicine. Her grandson is all that’s “left in the world with her” so she tries to believe that he’s still there. Another reason why she’s a hero is because of how her quest was set up. She faces loneliness as she walks the entire distance, or duration, on her own. After the hunter tells Phoenix that he doesn’t have money but drops a nickel so “I come to stealing”(51) as she is tempted by his lies. Not to mention how much danger she has faced. She fell into holes, walked through thorns tearing at her dress, and not to mention she had a gun pointed at her. She is very well worthy of being called a hero after the quest she had.
