Heroes are people who stand for what they believe in. A hero is someone who is selfless, thinks of others before themselves, and had made a significant impact in history. These individuals perform extraordinary deeds, and make sacrifices for others. Most heroes believe that the world can always change for the better. Welles Crowther saved many people in an extraordinary act of heroism.
Welles saved and affected a great many people in an extraordinary act of heroism. He was born May 17, 1977 in Upper Nyack N.Y. Crowther lived an ordinary young life. His father gave him a red bandanna when he was 6 years old. He never went anywhere without his bandanna. Crowther followed his father and worked to become a member of Empire Hook and Ladder Company. At age 7 he began cleaning fire trucks, and when he turned 16 Welles signed up to be a junior firefighter member. Finally, when he turned 18 he gained firefighter status at Hook and Ladder. Welles attended Boston College, where he joined and became a captain of the lacrosse team there. Then he received a job on the 104th …show more content…
On September 11th, at 9:03 AM Flight 175 hit the 104th floor of the North Tower. Many people were too injured to get out of the tower. Welles was working at the South Tower that day, and was in the South Tower when it was hit. He called his mother saying he was okay, then wrapped his red bandanna around his face and ran out of his workcenter. Crowther saved 10 people that day from the 78th floor. When Welles brought people down to the 61st floor, he ran back to help more civilians. He ran up and down saving lives until the South Tower fell. His and firefighters bodies were found at the command center in the South Tower's lobby. Welles Crowther was remembered as the Man in the Red Bandanna to many others after that day in New York City. Later, in 2006 Welles was named a honorary firefighter of New York
